Anti-Biosolids Group
At our last MABA member meeting in NYC on February 3, 2009, members reported to the Board about local biosolids happenings in our mid-Atlantic region. As part of the reports, the current situation in Pennsylvania, related to a newly formed anti-biosolids group was summarized for the members. For those who may not know, the new group appears to be well funded and is planning a meeting for early March in Berks County to recruit new members and question the safety of biosolids beneficial use. MABA Assessment Survey Results Summary
The MABA Assessment Survey
In mid-January, a MABA Assessment survey was opened on Survey Monkey and invitations to complete the survey were sent by email to all MABA members and former members (about 250 people), many of the members of the WEF Member Associations in the mid-Atlantic states, and other biosolids management stakeholders in the region who had been identified during an earlier MABA project. In all, perhaps 3000 individuals may have received the invitation.

Dioxin Risk in Soil and Plant Tissues after Long-Term Biosolids Application
Use of biosolids (treated municipal sewage sludge) on crops is a common practice because biosolids are a rich source of plant nutrients and organic matter. However, these biosolids can contain dangerous dioxins. Scientists investigated the effects of continuous and long-term application of biosolids on the levels of dioxins in soil and corn tissues.

WeCare Organics Acquires Vermitech
Jeff LeBlanc announces the acquisition of the Vermitech biosolids process from an Australian firm. Vermitech uses an earthworm composting technology for processing biosolids at two agencies in Pennsylvania. The new venture has been named WeCare Vermitech. More >>
